NT Labs Nitrite Test

The NT Labs Nitrite Test is a key tool to have in maintaining a balanced nitrogen cycle within your aquarium. Nitrites are the resultant compound created by beneficial bacteria breaking down ammonia created by fish waste. Though it’s not as harmful as ammonia in the water, it can be harmful to your fishes’ health, and like ammonia it is invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, it is a vital tool to have a nitrite test in each aquarium keeper’s arsenal, and the NT Labs Nitrite Test excels in this role.

There is no occasion where any nitrite is tolerable in an aquarium. A level of zero mg/L (ppm) should be maintained at all times. If 0.25 – 0.5 mg/l (ppm) of nitrite is found, then add a bacteria starter. If a level above this is recorded, then a substantial water change is essential. Change 25% of the water volume for 1 mg/l (ppm) nitrite and 50% for nitrite levels above this. If you do record a nitrite level, then it is important to check other vital water quality parameters, especially pH and ammonia.

Performing the test is simple and straightforward. After collecting a 5 ml water sample in the clean test tube, Add 5 drops of the Nitrite reagent, cap the tube, and gently mix. Let it develop for 2 minutes, then compare the resulting colour to the chart provided.
